Twenty-seven golden retrievers were rescued from “horrendous conditions” at a property in Hopkinton, Rhode Island, on Friday March 8, 2024. Seven of them were adult dogs and the other 20 were puppies. The Hopkinton Police Department followed up the rescue by sharing a Facebook post that detailed the situation, including some photos of officials carrying the dogs from the residence. The officials had responded “to investigate the unlicensed breeding of puppies as well as conditions detrimental to the health of the dogs,” the police department stated.

“On March 8, 2024, Hopkinton Police, Hopkinton Animal Control, RI Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, as well as an Environmental Scientist responded to an address on Alton Bradford Road to investigate the unlicensed breeding of puppies as well as conditions detrimental to the health of the dogs,” the post read.

“The resident was cooperative and surrendered twenty-seven Golden Retrievers — seven adults and twenty puppies,” it continued. “The dogs are now in the custody of RI Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals who will begin an adoption process when the dogs are medically cleared.”

In pictures shown from the scene, you can see puppies being carried from the residence by people wearing gloves, masks, and foot coverings. Other photos show the dogs in crates in rescue vehicles parked on the property.

The police department said that the resident of the property was “cooperative” and “surrendered” the canines with no issues. The dogs are now in the custody of the RISPCA, which “will begin an adoption process when the dogs are medically cleared.”

The dogs were given “wellness exams and TLC” upon arriving at the RISPCA. In a following update, authorities shared that the dogs aren’t available to foster or adopt yet because of an infection.

“Important pupdate!” a follow-up Facebook post read. “The golden retriever pups and dogs recently surrendered to us have tested positive for ringworm. This means that they are NOT available for foster or adoption for several weeks.”

“We really appreciate your interest in these pups. Once we post these dogs on our website, we will then consider adoption applications. If you are still interested once posted, we encourage you to reapply then,” the post continued. “We are currently giving the dogs the medical care they need and cannot consider applications at this time. We thank you for your patience and understanding.”
